While there are programs dedicated to providing adult literacy services in the Baton Rouge area, there has been a lack of coordination among organizations, and it has been difficult to standardize the measurement of learner gains. Awareness of services has been limited, and services have not always reached those in need. There are far more potential learners than those currently being served, but literacy service providers are under-staffed and under-funded. In short, the Baton Rouge area has lacked the capacity to effectively coordinate, improve, and track the quality and impact of literacy services.
Improving literacy in the Baton Rouge area began with the work of
several organizations and individuals who collectively studied adult
literacy in our community. Their work continued with the development
of a community-wide Literacy Plan and the launch of the Greater
Baton Rouge Literacy Coalition in 2005. The Coalition is the one
organization charged with the responsibility of implementing the
strategies of this community-wide Literacy Plan.
MISSION:
The Greater Baton Rouge
Literacy Coalition is dedicated to promoting adult literacy
through the creation, maintenance, and sustainability of an
integrated, cohesive, and
well-managed system that supports literacy service providers.
VISION
Grounded in the core
belief that access to literacy services is a fundamental right
for all, the Greater Baton Rouge Literacy Coalition is determined to
achieve
100% literacy among adult learners in our community.
